Max loves Sarah, but he doesn't know he loves Sarah, because he is afraid to love a woman. It was very upsetting for Sarah not to call him, because that forced him to call her, which was almost admitting that he loved her, even needed her. So he started the phone call angry. And then she made it worse because she no longer had that whiny tone of voice that made him feel secure that she needed him.

But he got her. He broke her glass, her special glass. It was all about anger and what a cunt she was. By the time he got home he was exhausted. What hard work it was to change his emotions into what he wanted them to be. He had a plan. The primary goal of the plan was to protect himself. That is why he had to constantly reroute his emotions, because they were always trying to connect to other people's emotions, and once you're connected to another person, you're vulnerable to that person.
